the best sling for nursing
A ring sling is a length of cloth with two rings sewn on one end. The end is threaded through the rings like a belt.
The part the baby is in is called the “pouch.” The two edges of fabric on either side of the pouch are called the “rails.” And he fabric that hangs from the rings is the “tail.” The rings are especially made for slings and are very strong and safe.
The first ring slings were made in the 1980s; they were padded and had a closed tail (NoJo etc.). The ring slings that hit the scene in the 1990s were unpadded with an open tail (original Mayawrap etc.). An open tail makes the sling a little harder to learn, but much more adjustable.
While an experienced babywearer can learn to breastfeed in any sling (sometimes hands free), a ring sling is often thought of as ideal for nursing. It can be adjusted to hold baby exactly where they need to be for nursing, and the open tail can double as a nursing coverup!
Ring slings and pouches are good for babies under a year and for situations in which a child is taken out and put back in frequently. Unlike a pouch, a ring sling can adjust so that you can hold your tiny baby in a snuggle hold (which many babies prefer). For long wearing of heavy babies, you may be more comfortable with a two shoulder carrier (like a wrap or a mei tai).
