the sling connection

So, what is the best sling for a baby (6 - 12 months)?
Pouch and ring sling excel in a quick hip carry.
Mei tai or a wrap for a comfortable back or front carry.

At this stage, you may find that facing out is gradually replaced by the hip carry.  Also, you may find that your little baby is more interested in playing on the floor than being worn all day.  Both the pouch and ring sling will provide a quick “pick me up put me down pick me up again” hip carry.  You can “pop” baby in and out easily.

Also, it is wonderful (freeing and comfortable) to wear a baby at this age on your back.  Both the mei tai and the soft structured carrier offer a very easy, secure back carry, so if back carries are your main concern, I recommend a mei tai or soft structured carrier over a wrap.  All three two shoulder carriers offer comfortable, snuggly front (tummy to tummy) holds for a baby at this age.

If you intend to wear baby exclusively on your hip (not snuggle or back) and are looking for the most comfortable carrier for just this position, you may find a Mei Hip to be perfect for you.

A note about back carries:   For a child under 12 months, I suggest doing a back carry with assistance until the wearer is completely comfortable doing a back carry, and even then, they should check their work in a mirror.  Check wearing instructions for details.

The purpose of this chart is to give you a general idea of how the various carriers are used.  These charts are not intended to take the place of thorough wearing instructions.
